Dive FAQs
When does dive season start and end?
Orange Hunt Dive Team Evening practices start the Tuesday after Memorial day and go through the end of the FCPS school year.
Orange Hunt Dive Team Morning practices start after FCPS schools dismiss for summer break and go through the end of July.
See our Season Schedule.
Are there "Try Outs" for the dive team?
Orange Hunt Dive Team welcomes divers of all abilities up to age 18. To ensure a safe practice, children should be able to do the following independently: jump off the diving board, resurface, swim to the edge of the pool, and tread water for at least 30 seconds.
What equipment does my driver need?
- Swim Suit
- Towels (it can get chilly between dives)
- Shammy (for divers who are doing flips)
Do I have to purchase a Team Suit?
Team Suits are not mandatory.
Are coaches available for private lessons?
Private lessons are available at OHSTC through the Orange Hunt Sharks Dive Team coaching staff. Lessons are booked in 1/2 hour time slots.
Private lesson rates start at $25/lesson, and up to two divers can share a private lesson slot. Payment should be made in Member Splash.
When is an appropriate time to speak to coaches?
Orange Hunt Dive Team coaches focus during practice is on divers. They cannot have side conversations with parents while divers are on the boards or between practice sessions.
Please do not disturb a coach during practice. Thank you for understanding.
Questions can be addressed after practice, at other times around the pool, or via email.
How are divers selected to participate in Tuesday night Meets?
Divers for “A” meets are determined by the coaches. Generally, all divers with complete lists are allowed to dive in A meets. If the team has more than 32 divers with complete lists, coaches will invite divers based on team needs in each meet. Divers who do not have full lists or are completing dives with assistance are often invited to participate in A meets.
Placement of divers is at the coaches’ discretion.
It is CRITICAL that if your diver is not available to participate in a meet, you mark them as UNAVAILABLE in the Meet Availability Form by the Friday before the meet.
Who can participate in B- meets?
Any Sharks who are working on new dives can participate in B- meets.
What do I bring to a Dive Meet?
- Wear a comfortable suit (team suit not mandatory)
- Two Towels (one to use between dives and one for after your event)
- T-shirt and possibly a sweatshirt or jacket depending on the weather
- Footwear
- Water bottle
- Team Spirit to cheer on your fellow Sharks!***Be sure to label everything***
How do I access dive meet results?
Dive Sheets are kept by the team and returned to divers at the end of the season. Meet results are posted on NVSLDive on Wednesday mornings.
What does “Thank you Diver” mean?
Trained Volunteer Officials help us run all of our meets and help ensure that all participants are following the rules, including the coaches, fans, and divers. Dive referees watch each dive and will fail a dive if it is not performed legally. Divers can fail a dive and continue to participate in the meet - but they will not receive a score for the failed dive. Divers who receive coach assistance to complete a dive will also be told “Thank you diver”.
What is a DQ?
If a diver fails two or more dives in a meet, their score for the meet will be replaced with DQ. Divers who DQ are not able to score points for the team, but can participate in the meet as long as they can safely perform their remaining dives.
Why do I need to volunteer? How do I volunteer?
We rely heavily on our families to help run each dive meet and social event. Without the support of volunteers, these events can’t happen!
We have many volunteer opportunities during practices and at meets. No experience is required for most jobs. Job sign ups are available on the SignUp Genius list.
How many hours am I required to volunteer?
Each FAMILY is required to complete 8 volunteer credits.
What is SwimTopia?
SwimTopia is our team management system; information for OH Swim and Dive Teams are found on the team website. While SwimTopia is used for meet management and records tracking for swim, Dive meet results and scores are still kept on the NVSLDive website. As SwimTopia adds functionality for dive teams we will move more of our meet operations to SwimTopia. This season, our Calendar, Meet Availability & Volunteer Sign-Ups are still in iCal and Sign-up Genius.
