When does swim season start and end?
Orange Hunt Swim Team Evening practices start the Tuesday after Memorial day and go through the end of the FCPS school year.
Orange Hunt Swim Team Morning practices start after FCPS schools dismiss for summer break and go through late July.
See our Practice Schedule.
Are there "Try Outs" for the swim team?
Orange Hunt Swim Team welcomes swimmers of all abilities between the ages of 6 and 18. To ensure a safe practice, children should be able to swim the length of the pool unassisted in freestyle and backstroke to participate on the swim team. Children under the age of 6 who can swim a length of the pool unassisted in freestyle and backstroke are welcome to join the team and must be evaluated by the head/assistant coach for their approval. Swimmers under the age of 7, who cannot yet swim a length of the pool, are invited to participate in Mini Sharks.
Do all swimmers need a swim cap?
An Orange Hunt Swim Team latex cap is provided with team registration fees. Silicon caps are available to purchase in the team store for an additional fee.
Swimmers must wear an Orange Hunt Swim Team cap or a cap with no other team logo during meets. Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the coaches.
When is an appropriate time to speak to coaches?
Orange Hunt Swim Team coaches focus duing practice is on swimmers. They cannot have side conversations with parents while swimmers are in the water or between practice sessions.
Please do not disturb a coach during practice. Thank you for understanding.
Questions can be addressed after practice, at other times around the pool, or via email.
How are swimmers selected to participate in Saturday Meets?
Swimmers for “A” meets are determined by the seed times in each stroke. The fastest three seed times in each event generally swim; however, a swimmer can only swim two individual events (plus relays), so it takes a minimum of six boys and six girls from each age group to cover all events in an "A" meet.
Placement of swimmers is at the coaches’ discretion.
A list of all swimmers for each “A” meet will be emailed by Thursday for the following Saturday. Announcements will be made to swimmers on Friday morning in practice.
It is CRITICAL that if you are going to be out of town that you make your swimmer unavailable for the day by the TUESDAY prior to the event.
Who can participate in Monday night meets?
All Sharks on Orange Hunt Swim Team can participate in Monday night meets.
See more information on choosing strokes here.

What is a DQ?
Trained Volunteer Officials help us run all of our meets and help ensure that all participants are following the rules, including the coaches, fans, and swimmers. Stroke and Turn officials and others are monitoring swimmers' strokes during events and will disqualify a swimmer if they do not perform a stroke "legally."
This disqualification is called a DQ.
When this happens, your swimmer's time will not be recorded and a DQ slip will be provided to our team by the official that explains the reason for the disqualification.
While a DQ may be frustrating to the swimmer, it is an effective way to identify a flaw in a swimmer's stroke, turn or take-off and can help our coaching staff correct the issue with the swimmer in future practices. Please feel free to ask the team reps or coaches at an appropriate time about a DQ and how the issue can be fixed.
Why do I need to volunteer? How do I volunteer?
We rely heavily on our families to help run each swim meet and social event. Without the support of volunteers, these events can’t happen!
We have many volunteer opportunities during practices and at meets. No experience is required unless specifically identified. All volunteer jobs are available here. Job sign ups are available on the SignUp Calendar.
How many hours am I required to volunteer?
Each FAMILY is required to complete 16 volunteer credits.
See more details here.
